Apple Watch SE (2nd Gen)

About

The September 2022 Apple Special Event was notable not only for the launch of four variants of the new iPhone 14, but also three new and updated Apple Watch models. There was the Apple Watch Series 8 (which succeeded the Series 7), and an all-new Apple Watch Ultra. There was also the announcement of the second-generation Apple Watch SE, which was actually a reduced cost version of the Apple Watch Series 8, being roughly $50 to $100 less than the mainstream model, and was aimed at a market that included children who may not therefore need their own iPhone (more than one Watch can be paired to a single iPhone). Tim Cook, Apple CEO, was live on-stage in front of an excited live audience (something we have not seen for a few years due to pandemic restrictions), and he introduced a pre-recorded space and star-themed presentation, complete with all the great special effects and sounds you associate with a major launch event of this type.

Available for pre-order and for sale during the month of September, the Apple Watch SE came in two screen sizes (40 and 44 mm), and was noted as being more robust than previous iterations. Unlike the Series 8, the Apple Watch SE came with a plastic rear cover and was swim-proof but not dust resistant. The Apple Watch SE did not have all the health tracking functions of the Apple Watch Series 8 (temperature sensing, blood oxygen and ECG for example) but did have the same high, low and irregular heart rate sensing and ovulation cycle tracking. The incorporation of the same high accuracy gyroscopes and accelerometers as the Series 8 enabled the SE to operate crash and fall detection, combined with an SOS function, complete with international emergency dialling. The Apple Watch SE was available in three colours – starlight, midnight and silver.

Repairs

The Apple Watch SE is a great choice for people who are looking for a smart watch that is genuinely smart, is durable and has some great features at an affordable price. When this Watch came on the market, Apple targeted it at a wide range of potential customers, including children who may need the functionality the Watch offers, but don’t need the full features (and cost) of owning an actual iPhone. The ‘Family Setup’ mode on the SE (and the other Apple Watches in the range) means that multiple Watches can be paired with one single iPhone. A parent can have the comfort of knowing that a child (and their child’s vital signs) can be tracked, and they will be readily contactable without worrying that the child may damage or lose their more expensive iPhone. The fall, crash detection and emergency SOS call functions are also a comfort, although we all hope that they will never actually be needed.

With a plastic rear cover, and swim-proof case, the Apple Watch SE is a sturdy piece of technology, but a wearable device that you use every day is always going to be subject to some pretty rough treatment. Playing sports, going to the gym, even simple day to day use can all take their toll, and if your Watch SE gets damaged, what can you do?
