In March 2011, Apple introduced the iPad 2 as a replacement for the original iPad, and this ushered in a new technological era. The original iPad had been a very successful piece of tech, but the iPad 2 brought in many improvements, not least of which was a lighter weight. While still chunkier than later models, the iPad 2 felt considerably lighter in the hand than the original. With a faster processor and both front and back cameras, the iPad 2 enabled the introduction of FaceTime – at the time, a relatively new concept in video calling.

The iPad 2 was 15% lighter, and 33% thinner than the original – the lighter weight and slimmer profile came about by Apple managing to use thinner glass for the display, and by a reduction in the size of the gap between the display and the battery. The slimmer profile disguised the fact that the iPad 2 was actually stronger than its predecessor, and prudent users could also ensure the screen was even better protected by adding a Smart Cover. Introduced as an accessory at the time of launch, this was a custom-built cover that was attached to the iPad 2 using magnets, and was designed to both protect the screen, and to put the iPad to sleep and wake it up when closed or opened.
