September 2021 was a busy month for Apple product announcements and releases, with the Apple iPhone 13 mini, the smallest in the new range, being launched along with three other new iPhone models at the Cupertino-based ‘California Streaming’ event on the 14^th. The event was held virtually to an empty auditorium due to ongoing pandemic restrictions, but it had an estimated audience of 2 million, who eagerly watched the event on YouTube.

As well as the iPhone 13 mini, the new suite of iPhones included the regular-sized iPhone 13, and the large format flagship models, the iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max, all available to purchase from the 24th September onwards. The same event also saw the launch of new iPad and iPad mini models, and the latest version of Apple Watch (7^th series) which was to be made available for purchase at a later date.

The iPhone 13 mini was the successor to the previous years’ iPhone 12 mini, with a similar-looking external outline, flat chassis, MagSafe technology and steel case. However, in common with its full-sized sibling the iPhone 13, the use of the power optimised Apple A15 Bionic chip gave an improved battery life - for the iPhone 13 mini, as much as 1.5 hours more battery life than the iPhone 12 mini.

Changes to the cameras and camera system were also a feature of the new mini - there were still 3 cameras, all 12MP, but the rear-facing cameras were fitted in a diagonal pattern to accommodate larger sensors. The improved sensors were designed to allow more light into the camera lenses, and as well as the visible physical changes, there were other improvements incorporated into this iPhone. The main camera boasted an upgraded optical image stabilisation system and the new computational photography system called HDR 4. This new system enabled users to adopt any of a series of photographic modes, from rich contrast, vibrant, warm, cool and cinematic mode.

From the front, the iPhone 13 mini had a similar look to the 2020 iPhone 12 mini – a flat edge on a steel case, and a 5.4-inch Retina display, but the functionality of the iPhone 13 mini had undergone several major improvements. According to Apple, the 13 mini Super Retina screen was 28% brighter than the old model. The use of the power efficient Apple A15 Bionic chip also had a major impact on increasing battery life, and Apple claimed that the CPU could operate as much as 50% faster than rival products.
