It was in September 2022 that Apple CEO Tim Cook revealed the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max to the waiting audience at Apple HQ in Cupertino. The revelations were made with Mr Cook live on stage, in front of a real live audience (a first for 2 years), but he was fronting a fully pre-recorded and very slick presentation. This sixteenth iteration of the iPhone replaced the previous year’s iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max, with the 14 Pro being released with a 6.1” screen and a new camera set-up. In this latest iPhone, the controversial ‘notch’ which had contained the cameras on previous models was replaced by concealed rounded cut-out areas near the top of the screen, and the main camera now boasted 48 MP and a 65% larger sensor than its predecessor, along with a 12 MP ultra-wide camera.

The iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max pairing were fitted with the brand new A16 Bionic SoC (system on a chip), as opposed to the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus which still had the older A15 chip as used on the iPhone 13. Battery life has always been a subject for discussion when it comes to smartphones, and the iPhone 14 Pro was advertised as being able to support an incredible 23 hours of video play back, and 20 hours of streaming play back. In another first, the iPhone 14 Pro display had ‘always on’ capability, which used a dimmed lock screen and reduced refresh rate to assist with battery life, but sprung to life when touched. The display itself was treated with an oleophobic surface coating to resist those annoying fingerprints, smudges and smears.

Another feature of all the iPhone 14 range was satellite connectivity, enabling SOS calls to be made via the growing network of Globalstar satellites. Initially, this emergency service was only available in selected areas, but owing to a partnership with Apple, coverage was planned to increase to include Europe over the following few months.
