iPhone 14

About

September 2022 saw Tim Cook (Apple CEO) taking to the stage at the Steve Jobs Theatre in Cupertino to make the now traditional autumn announcements of new and upgraded Apple products, and this time there were four new iPhone models to see. The new 6.1” screen iPhone 14 was on show, accompanied by the larger sized (6.7” screen) iPhone 14 Plus, as well as the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max models. The iPhone 14 range constituted the 16th generation of the ever-popular device and replaced the previous year’s iPhone 13 offerings. The event itself was attended by a live audience for the first time since Covid restrictions had been lifted, and although Tim Cook was present on-stage, the actual presentation was fully pre-recorded.

The iPhone 14 had a similar appearance to, and many of the same features as the iPhone 13, being fitted with the same Apple A15 Bionic chip, albeit with an additional GPU core as previously featured in the 2021 iPhone 13 Pro. Where the iPhone 14 differed from its precursor was in both battery life and camera system. The iPhone 14 battery was said to be able to operate for up to 19 hours, and was claimed by Apple to be the best ever available on an iPhone.

The dual camera array from the iPhone 13 (12MP camera, wide-angle and ultra-wide-angle lens) was still a feature on the later model, but the 14 had been provided with a larger sensor and a faster aperture. The claim was that these enhancements would enable low light images to show an almost 50% improvement in quality. Another enhancement - Action Mode – would ensure better video stabilisation, and the replacement of the Deep Fusion photographic engine with the innovative Photonic Engine would show even more detail and better colour in captured images.
