Coming onto the market in September 2014, the large format iPhone 6 Plus was launched in conjunction with the more conventionally-sized iPhone 6 as a replacement for the iPhone 5s, and it took the world by storm. Classed as a ‘phablet’ (the size is mid-way between a phone and a tablet), this iPhone variant was the largest ever launched, and boasted a magnificent high-definition 5.5-inch Retina display. Other features of the iPhone 6 Plus were that both cameras had been updated, and the 8 mega pixel rear camera was fitted with optical image stabilisation, and could shoot slow-motion video.

Looking beyond the size of the iPhone 6 Plus, other changes included the use of the M8 motion co-processor, which was an advance on the M7 version in the 5s, and included a barometer which could sense changes in altitude. Inclusion of an A8 processor also meant a performance increase of 25% for the CPU and 50% for graphics over the previous model, with less heat being produced. In common with the iPhone 6, the iPhone 6 Plus also had NFE support for Apple Pay, and the power button re-located on the side near to the top of the long edge, to make it easier to access while keeping it free from hand contamination.
