Apple Watch (Series 1)

About

In September 2016, the second generation of the Apple Watch was announced, and this generation consisted of two streams – Apple Watch Series 1 and Apple Watch Series 2. As soon as the Series 1 Watches were announced, production of the Apple Watch 1st Generation was discontinued. The Apple Watch Series 1 was put on sale at a lower initial sales price than the 1st Generation Watch, was still available in the same two sizes (42 and 38 mm), but was only made available in a single (Sport band) variant.

The Apple Watch Series 1 was fitted with an Apple S1P processor, a lower cost variant of the Apple S2. The difference between the two types of CPU is that the Apple S2 chip, which was fitted to the higher priced and higher spec Apple Watch Series 2, had a GPS chip, but the S1P did not. The lack of a GPS chip meant that the Apple Watch Series 1 was still reliant on pairing with a compatible iPhone (an iPhone 5 or a later model) for location services to be enabled. Retaining the 8 GB storage and 512 MB RAM, Taptic Engine, fitness tracking and health monitoring functions, the Apple Watch Series 1 was a great value replacement for the original Apple Watch, and continued in production until September 2017.
