Launched in October 2014 alongside the iPad Air 2, the iPad Mini 3 was the third release of the popular and easy to handle small-format iPads. In physical appearance, the new iPad Mini was identical to its precursor, the iPad Mini 3, however the Mini 3 differed in respect of the addition of the Touch ID sensor (making Apple Pay possible), a choice of storage sizes, and being available with a Gold coloured case in addition to the Space Grey and Silver of the previous model.

Touch ID consists of a sensor located on the Home button, that stores and detects a user’s unique fingerprint(s), and which then allows access to the iPad’s functionality without having to input a passcode. Users can store one or more fingerprints to use as a key for unlocking the iPad Mini 3, and the process is quick and simple but still secure. The enhanced security of Touch ID made it possible for Apple Pay to be used with confidence on this version of the iPad (along with the iPad Air 2) for the first time. In all, the iPad Mini 3 represented yet another step forward in the ascendency of tablet computing over traditional computers and laptops.
