The first-generation MacBook Pro, with a metallic polycarbonate body and available in 15-inch and 17-inch models, was announced in 2006. Looking similar to the PowerBook G4 (which it replaced), enhancements included the use of Intel Core CPUs, and iSight webcam. Both models were refreshed in 2006 and 2007, with updated processors, increased memory and reductions in size and weight, until they were replaced by the second-generation in 2008.
The second-generation ‘unibody’ MacBook Pro came out in 2008. With an aluminium body, this version of the Pro was styled with tapered sides (similar to the MacBook Air), and was slimmer and deeper than the previous version. A notable feature of this MacBook Pro was a high-gloss screen with edge-to-edge glass (a matt option was also available). Compact in size, and with regular performance enhancements, this model was produced until 2011 when it was superseded by the third-generation MacBook Pro.
In 2012 the third-generation ‘Retina’ MacBook Pro came onto the market. With an aluminium enclosure and 15.4-inch high-resolution Retina display, these laptops were fitted with a sold state drive rather than a hard disk. In 2012, a cost-reduced 13-inch version was introduced, and both models underwent the usual improvements and enhancements until superseded by the fourth-generation MacBook Pro.
The fourth-generation ‘Touch Bar and USB-C’ MacBook Pro, available in 13-inch and 15-inch formats, was unveiled in October 2016. Both models were fitted with a larger Track Pad, and a keyboard using ‘second generation’ Apple specific butterfly key mechanisms (similar to those on MacBook). Most of the new fourth-generation models also had ‘Touch Bar’ which is a touch enabled strip on the keyboard to replace function keys, and Touch ID security. With still-thinner screen bezels and slimmer chassis, this generation of MacBook Pro has been upgraded annually to date.
