The 2023 Apple product launch took place in early September, and was as usual broadcast from Apple’s own high-technology venue in California - Apple Park, Cupertino. Several updates to existing products were announced, most notable of these being the launch of four newly-redesigned iPhones. The standard models of this 17^th generation of iPhones were named as the iPhone 15 and the iPhone 15 Max. When it came to the flagship models, there had been speculation that the highest level of iPhone might have been named the iPhone Ultra, in line with the recently issued Apple Watch Ultra. However, this speculation proved unfounded, and the two flagship phones were named using well-established conventions as the iPhone 15 Pro and the iPhone 15 Pro Max.

These new iterations of the iPhone replaced the iPhone 14 range, but the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max were significant in that they offered a greater degree of physical re-design than had been seen since the launch of the iPhone 12. To begin with, the casing material was a total change from the usual aluminium (as seen in other models, including the latest iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Max) to titanium (grade 5). This new material was accompanied by a totally new colour range, which included natural titanium, as well as blue, black and white titanium, but no gold option for the first time since that colour was introduced with iPhone X. Other physical changes included a subtly curved display and back glass, rounded corners and a bezel size that had reduced by half a millimetre, a small but subtle change.

Fitted with the newly-issued Apple A17 Pro system on chip, with its enhanced graphic processing unit (GPU), it was announced by Apple that the iPhone 15 Pro Max (as well as the iPhone 15 Pro) would in future be able to be used to play a series of games that had only been available on games consoles or computers in the past – a major step forward for gaming enthusiasts. Another enhancement for the convenience of users was the substitution of a configurable ‘Action Button’ for the previous single-purpose Mute switch. The Action Button could by default toggle silent mode on and off, but if desired, the user could change this function for something more relevant to them, such as to operate voice memos or change settings on the camera.

Finally, in 2018 Apple had made the decision to begin replacing the familiar Apple-specific Lightning connector with USB-C, starting with that year’s iPad. This change was being made in line with the EU’s (European Union) decision to standardise all electronic device chargers on USB-C as part of an effort to reduce the mountain of electronic waste that being was generated each year. The iPhone 15 series was the first to incorporate this new EU legislation, and the change was made both in support of the positive environmental goals, and to enable Apple to continue to sell iPhones within the EU.
