iPhone 15 Pro

About

On 12th September 2023, Apple Park in Cupertino (California) was once again the venue for the annual launch of Apple’s new products. Among other upgraded and updated products, there were four brand new iPhones on offer – the flagship iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max, as well as the more modestly priced iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus. All four 2023 iPhones featured major design changes, some of the most significant since the release of the iPhone 12, including form changes, new colours, different casing materials and replacement of the Lightning connector with a USB-C connector.

From a visual point of view, the rounded edges of the iPhone 15 Pro and the curves built into the rear glass and the display made this 17th generation of the ever-popular iPhone distinctive and elegant, but changes to the externals didn’t end there. Instead of the aluminium used on past models (plus the current iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Max), the iPhone 15 Pro and the iPhone 15 Pro Max were constructed from grade 5 titanium. The bezels on the display were narrower than previously seen (1.55 mm as opposed to 2.22 mm), and the casing now came in four distinctive new colours – black, white, blue and natural titanium, but there was no gold option - another first since the introduction of the iPhone X.

The iPhone 15 Pro was fitted with the latest Apple A17 Pro system on a chip. It was announced at the launch event that this chip, which featured an updated GPU (graphic processing unit) would in future enable popular games previously only available on PCs and games consoles to be played on both iPhone 15 Pro models. Both the Pro and the Pro Max were also fitted with a new ‘Action Button’ replacing the Mute switch. This new button was configurable, and at default setting would toggle silent mode on or off, but could also be set for other uses such as voice memo recording or camera settings.

Apple’s replacement of the iconic Lightning connector with USB-C had already begun with the 3rd gen iPad in 2018, but this change was now incorporated into the iPhone 15 family in order to comply with European Union legislation aimed at avoiding generation of electronic waste. This was a good environmental move, but also ensured that iPhone 15 models could continue to be sold within the EU.
