iPhone 15 Plus

About

Apple Park, located in Cupertino (California) was once again the setting for Apple’s annual product launch, which took place on 12th September. As part of the launch event, Apple unveiled four new iPhones for 2023; the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus, as well as the new flagship models of iPhone 15 Max and iPhone 15 Max Pro. These four new iPhones were the 17th generation of this Apple staple, and replaced the various models of iPhone 14. However, the iPhone 15 Plus and fellow iPhones were notable for several changes that had been made since the launch of the iPhone 14 series. First, there had been quite a design change from the earlier models, incorporating a lightly curved screen and rear glass, and a more rounded corner profile, making the iPhone 15 Plus look quite distinctive from its predecessors. A new range of colours was also revealed, which went from sober black, a brighter blue through green, yellow and even pink.

A major change within the iPhone 15 family was that the well-known Lightning connector had been dropped in favour of a USB-C connector. Use of this new connector came about due to a European Commission ruling, which became law in the ‘Radio Equipment Directive’ in October 2022. Basically, the Commission was trying to address the large amount of electronic waste that was being generated when new smartphones required a specific charger, and therefore old (and still potentially usable) chargers were being discarded. It was felt that standardising the connectors on phone chargers would go some way some way towards addressing this issue, and Apple were happy to comply to retain the ability to sell iPhone 15 models within the European Union (EU).

The iPhone 15 and the iPhone 15 Plus both boasted the Apple A16 chip, colour range and similar curved and rounded outline. However, the decision to opt for the dearer Plus model could have been aided by the gain of the larger 6.7-inch Super Retina XDR OLED display, and an improved battery life – 100 hours of audio as opposed to 80 on the iPhone 15, and 26 hours of video on the iPhone 15 Plus compared to the 20 of the lower model.
